View Full Version : Sometimes spells land but deal no damage

When casting cinder bolt (this has happened with various other spells) the spell will land (soanso is bathed in fire) but there is no damage in the chat and the mob's health doesn't go down.
I don't know how to duplicate it because it's very intermittent. Maybe a wizard can confirm this?

I'm sure we would have heard much about this if it was a real bug. Perhaps your filtering is off or out of range? Moving to technical...

No, this exists Rogean, promise. It seems to be when a nuke is resisted down to almost no dmg. Spam a 20 dmg nuke a bunch on a semi resistant mob and you can replicate it. I assumed this meant the spell did 1 dmg or something.

This spell does a pretty good chunk of damage. It's fairly obvious when it doesn't do any damage.
I'll make an effort to stand closer to make certain that I'm not missing any damage notifications (but I did get the bathed in fire part).

cinder bolt one of those los spells where you see the bolt flying towards mob?
Prolly an issue with LoS more than anything i imagine.

It actually hits the mob though (soanso is bathed in fire).

I want to confirm this:
I had a spell land (soandso is bathed in fire) with no damage being listed. I cast the spell again and it said "soandso is bathed in fire" and then "soandso was hit by non-melee for 333 points of damage."
So I was definitely in range for the first spell.

The Bard direct damage spell (something's Boastful Bellow or something like that, it's the first direct damage spell, I forget what level it's obtained at) occasionally does this - you just get "(target) reels in pain" but you don't see the damage message.

Maybe it didn't do 1 damage and instead did 0 damage.
Some spells (the paladin stuns) could be fully resisted but still actually PUSH the mob the way you were facing, could be one of those things, if there was a secondary affect on the spell it could trigger but do no damage.
Effect 1 = Dmg
Effect 2 = stun
Effect 3 = push +5 yards
etc..

I had this happen to my cleric just now. Nuked a red con, wasn't resisted but no damage.
Saying that, what i have had happen before is that my dmg message has gone to 2 different windows before. Not quite sure the reason why, usually happens if i'm REALLY close to a mob, it'll go in my main chat window in a diff colour.
Very strange.

Normally if something resists I get a resist message. I didn't get one of those.

I'd suggest turning logging on for a couple sessions, then search through the logs to see if there are casts where the flavor text appears but the damage message is missing. It's possible that line was redirected to another window, or you missed it in the spam. But in both of those cases it would still be in the log. If it does not show up in the log, that is pretty convincing proof that it really wasn't there. If you do find the lines missing you can forward the log to the devs so they can check the server's logs and begin to track the problem down in the emu code.

What Kainzo said is probably true - the Bard DD spell has a chance to interrupt casting so it probably just did 0 damage but the interrupt wasn't resisted. Makes sense, not really an issue.

When the spell lands but does not damage it's still generating aggro. I had to nuke twice after the first didn't deal any damage and the mob was definitely upset.

I don't see a replicating 18 points of damage, just 37. So either you had a DoT that does 18 points a tick that fell off at that very second, or your nuke did 18 points of damage.

that non-melee is coming from a DS, the 37 and 18 consistently come after a hit on the pet...
looks like anyways?
I believe I've seen this issue too, but have no logs to support yet. workin on it.

It looks like he nuked for 18. There is no other non-melee hit for 18 except the one. 37 is the DS, which comes with each hit on the pet.

Have to agree with Girth, in both cases there is a report of non-melee damage followed immediately by a bathed in fire message. the first one being 18, the next being 333.
That said, I often don't see messages reported back when I buff someone. Usually I do, but sometimes even when they're right next to me I don't see shower of runes, blurs, gets faster, etc.

How far you are away from the mob and what damage you see is also a factor. if you are at the 40 yard marker and send in a nuke but move to 41 yards - you may not see the damage you do. Seeing as logging is done via distance of your character and the target that is affected.
