View Full Version : do your skills decrease if you delevel?

Something I have never known in all my years in EQ. If you are at one level and have maxed your skills to that level (offense, defensive, 1h slash, etc) and then you delevel, do you maintain your skill at the higher level or is it mathematically capped in the combat calculations?
Like, would a formerly lvl 60 rogue tear up Naggy at lvl 52?
I believe what happens is that they're capped at the lower level's maximum and then once you relevel they immediately go back to the higher value. Not sure, though. Should be relatively easy to test: lose a level and then look at your skills in the skill menu - if they're in red, they're being capped at lower values.
They appear to be capping at the lower level's max. That is NOT classic.
Originally there was no cap at all, this was abused on the PvP servers (big shock, I know) by players who would delevel deliberately. At some point Verant/SoE responded to that abuse by limiting effective skill to the cap for [current level + 2] (should be easy enough to find the patch note and date this change within the timeline.)

Kaev is 100% correct.

Sounds to me like EQ PvP has been pure faggotry from the get go. Glad we brought it here.
I love it when people post what I was thinking so I don't have to.

Level 1 melee with 1000+ attack/AC? Sounds fun to me!
Of course he'd still probably get beat to hell by red cons, even though he'd be able to tank entire newbie zones of level 1-2 mobs as long as he had a rubi bp on. Good ol levels.

I remember seeing this on Rallos Zek and Tallon Zek.
It was mostly melee classes delvling to lvl 20 so they could hit with the higher cap with higher weapon and offense/defensive skills.

This isn't working? That's a shame, I actually deleveled my paladin from 55 to 22 and absolutely wrecked shit like hill giants for great exp with me and my (then) girl's character back in the day. I was pissed when this patch hit like 2 weeks later.

De-Leveling: Characters that lose levels will only retain the combat skills of a character two levels higher. This means that if a character of level 10 somehow loses 5 levels, that character will only have skills that would be available to a 7th level character. This change will apply to all servers (it has to, code-wise). So the two level buffer is there to make certain that people that lose levels during normal gameplay will be minimally affected (hopefully not affected at all), while those that purposefully lose levels with the intent of causing other players grief will find themselves at no great advantage.
Also,
You can now move items around inside containers that are in the bank.

Ah yes the days of RZ when item loot and deleveling were in full force. Deleveld melee were on permament guard duty at the starting zones. Ready to crunch newbies. Although it was fun to, instead, roll a wizzy and get him to 8; then come back and fry that deleveler to a crisp. Really pissed them off, too.

This is what your skills look like when you de-lvl from 60 to 35. Havent tested it yet, but looks like you lose em.
Yes i know my UI blows, don't care.

Should be able to retain skills while deleveling. Can we get a GM response to this? was considering doing this with one of my alts for kicks.

Why would you delevel that far?

Boredom, I still have my Rogue for raids etc. Also its fun to have a 35 paladin with epic and vp gear.

You should update your signature since you deleveled your paladin, it's only fair :p
