All well and good, but if this is the case a renaissance man shouldn't need to look for help. They learn to do it on their own!
Also to the people talking about coldain shawl. 158 skill is sufficient for Shawls 1-8:
Shawl 5 (75 threads + 5 biles) you have 95% success rate (maximum)
Shawl 6 (1 beard, 2 siren hair, 2 manticore mane, 2 wolf whiskers) you have 53% success rate
Shawl 7 (1 royal blood, 1 runed seashell, 3 iceclad cutlass and some pieces of Velium+200 plat) you have 88% success rate
It will be far more economical and time saving to simply stop tailoring at 158 and farm quest pieces and eat the failures if that is your goal. At 180 tailoring I failed the Shawl 5 (115 trivial) combine and I've failed the subcombine for Shawl 6 thread. Even skilling up beyond the trivial point doesn't save you from critical fails.
I've also one shot Shawl 6 and Shawl 7 at 158 tailoring on toons as well. Generally I'd say plan on needing 2-3 combines for Shawl 6 and usually just one for Shawl 7. Looking at the components I listed above, you really don't lose too much in failures on 6 and 7.

I am doing the tailoring for the Shawl quest Daldaen. Great advice and I believe I will take that under my hat and go with it. I thought I should do the right thing and skill up as far as possible as the quest suggests, but with your thoughts added in here.... well... doesn't take rocket science to figure it out. Maybe I'll get the odd skill up with some "lucky" combines later on..but for now, I'll keep trying my luck on the shawl combines and see what happens.
