What kind of % chance is it of a successful Velious combine (panther, phase, tigeraptor, etc.) at 158 skill?
http://wiki.project1999.com/Tradeskills has the formulas, but the one you'd want is: Chance of success = MIN(SKILL - (.75*trivial) + 51.5, 95).

Man those HQ Lion pelts are rare as hell. I have one that will hopefully successfully combine for my own use, but I do not envision farming the pelts. Much easier to get pelts from Velious.
The hard part about many of the Velious tailored armors isn't the pelts, it's all the other stuff that goes into them. For instance, arctic wyvern hides are easy to get (quad kiters sell them for cheap), but you also need Cod Oil (slowly fished) and Velium Studs (30p temper plus you have to farm Velium in Crystal Caverns or Velks).

Thanks Loramin! I had not seen that chart.

Yes, the blacksmithing components are tedious due to farming the raw ore and all the combines to end up with the studs.

I understand there is recipe to craft the velium temper? If not, yeah the cost certainly adds up.

I have a handful of panther skins, one phasepanther and like 50 tigeraptor hides to go with 7 drake eggs (foraged in SS). But, my tailor is just now at the Wu's skill level after killing hundreds of CC spiders for the silks required just to get that far.

Daldaen makes a great point in that tradeskills didn't get proper attention/fixing until the Luclin expansion. Earring of the Solstice was the shit! Since that is not happening, it is still fun to hit a combine and make shit for alts, an odd sale, etc.

Othmir fur items are lower trivial than panther, tiger raptor and wyvern hide armors. Just need a chanter to make vials for you. Usually see druids quadding them.

Get a 60 Enchanter, 60 Bard and 60 Mage or Wizard.
You're over-complicating this... You can do it just as effectively solo as a level 44 bard

All well and good, but if this is the case a renaissance man shouldn't need to look for help. They learn to do it on their own!

Also to the people talking about coldain shawl. 158 skill is sufficient for Shawls 1-8:

Shawl 5 (75 threads + 5 biles) you have 95% success rate (maximum)
Shawl 6 (1 beard, 2 siren hair, 2 manticore mane, 2 wolf whiskers) you have 53% success rate
Shawl 7 (1 royal blood, 1 runed seashell, 3 iceclad cutlass and some pieces of Velium+200 plat) you have 88% success rate

It will be far more economical and time saving to simply stop tailoring at 158 and farm quest pieces and eat the failures if that is your goal. At 180 tailoring I failed the Shawl 5 (115 trivial) combine and I've failed the subcombine for Shawl 6 thread. Even skilling up beyond the trivial point doesn't save you from critical fails.

I've also one shot Shawl 6 and Shawl 7 at 158 tailoring on toons as well. Generally I'd say plan on needing 2-3 combines for Shawl 6 and usually just one for Shawl 7. Looking at the components I listed above, you really don't lose too much in failures on 6 and 7.
I am doing the tailoring for the Shawl quest Daldaen. Great advice and I believe I will take that under my hat and go with it. I thought I should do the right thing and skill up as far as possible as the quest suggests, but with your thoughts added in here.... well... doesn't take rocket science to figure it out. Maybe I'll get the odd skill up with some "lucky" combines later on..but for now, I'll keep trying my luck on the shawl combines and see what happens.

Take a step back from the min-max or total profit margin aspect of it. I like just maxing out tradeskills for fun. Like the idea of being a renaissance man.

Just get the bard to spam snare and kite over a wizard.

Very effective!

I'm always surprised by the number of bards selling pl that refuse my generous offer to speed it up.

Yep, just take Wu's as far as it goes. The price for skill-ups after that gets pretty steep.

This is actually one of the very few things P99 makes harder by not being classic. On live you could actually see (if you tried hard) which wurms had glowing biles and which didn't, because the ones with biles had a faint-but-still-visible illumination. Here they all look the same.

I imagine the wurms don't glow here because of some Titanium limitation, but still it's too bad we can't have it the way it was on live.

I'd argue the Shawl 5 is the worst to farm. Between having to farm 75 threads in Velketors and 5 biles in GD, it's the most time consuming quest in the chain other than Shawl 8.

However you are already at maximum success rate on that combine so give it a go.

For Shawl 6, it may be worth your while to simply farm enough for 2-3 combines depending on your class. If you can easily solo farm the components and port yourself around like a Druid or wizard, maybe not. But if you're needing assistance in farming or traveling, it may be prudent to just get 4-6 whiskers, siren hairs, and manticore manes and combine. Rather than doing 1 set, failing and having to travel back to CS, GD and EW to collect more. Depends on how you roll the dice. Upside of farming extras is you can do another Shawl 7 quest and spawn an additional Dain whenever Luclin launches in 2026.

Shawl 7 you have a high chance of only needing to do once. If you do fail however keep in mind the Burin which required the Molkor and Swordfish tooth, is returned on success or failure. So you shouldn't delete this item. Also if you have a friend who has done this, the Unfired Rune is a tradeable combine and the firing step *should be* no fail (unsure if it is correctly flagged as such on P99). Which means you can skip pottery entirely if you have a friend to do the Unfired Rune combine for you.
I didn't find the biles to be too hard to farm (I just quaded the shardwurms), but the velks part was pure hell

I agree on the rest, though. Easier to farm several combines worth of shawl 6 than to skill up any farther
