Default Preserved Chodaki Vocal Cords - Improper mechanic

Ok. I started here 4 years ago. I was grossly disappointed with being unable to box, because there was nothing i loved more than talking to myself. Finally the Vocal cords have been released, and they don't work (at least not the way their supposed to).

Your only supposed to be able to talk through your pet when your pet is TARGETED. However I am talking through my pet regardless of what I have targeted.

Very disappointed, I would have to keep removing charm and re-casting it if i wanted to engage in humor with people by having a conversation with my pet, or charmed NPC. Very very sad.

This is the only relevant paragraph to developers. If you crowd your bug report with unnecessary information, it will often get overlooked.

You should also link classic evidence so we can have everything documented in one place.

A post from 2002 confirms your pet should only talk if it was targeted.

OP seems to be correct. Out of era post does bring up some possible limitation to it working zone wide.

Contrary to the spell description, the effect seems to work at much more than 100 range. However, it requires you to target your pet and the pet must be in line of sight.

(BTW, for those who don't know, doors usually don't block line of sight but walls usually do)

While the spell lasts, everything you say in /say while targeting your pet will come out as if your pet said it. But if you target yourself (or anything else other than your pet), /say will work normally.

Cross linking additional potential bugs here as evidence is in this thread:

Is there any channel besides say where this spell should work?

This post seems to indicate say only:

NNTP-Posting-Date: Wed, 16 May 2001 10:40:32 PDT Organization: SBC Internet Services Xref: archiver1.sj.google.com alt.games.everquest:75095 There's a spell called Voice Graft...it can be cast on your pet which allows you to speak through him...I know it's a Nec spell but I don't know if it's for any other classes. The spell works by targetting your pet and then talking...it doesn't work with /ooc, /shout, /group or /guildsay

Haven't noticed anything besides say yet, but nothing explicitly saying "only say".

Interestingly, says this spell used to work on NPCs. That would be pretty fun for refresh servers

This seems to say voice graft no longer worked on NPCs mid Sept 1999 era. Has some other details of an echo effect you used to see prior to patch on your screen only, but was later removed:
Quote:
I like the spell for the times when you have to take a break from fighting and to make some Jokes.
- Cast spell on Pet
- Select Pet (either manually or hit F1 twice)
- type /say ........
You will see a screen like this:

You say "Look at me. I'm a skinny one"
Gobann00 said "Look at me. I'm a skinny one"

But everyone else only sees this:
Gobann00 said "Look at me. I'm a skinny one"

So it only works when you select your Pet first =)

Cannot make mobs talk. Works fine with MY pet. Other pets, mobs, NPC's etc. do not talk any longer. You no longer see the "echo" effect also so they did something to it. But now it's no fun.

So interesting here, but NPCs saw pets as indifferent, so apparently voice graft allowed you to get quest text from NPCs when hailing through pet. You could apparently even get items from the quest to your pet.

This would require much greater research / corroboration, but apparently the beg skill could be used to get items back from your pet as long as they weren't no-drop

I recently just got sentient axe and was having so much fun messing around in freeport. Other than being able to talk from your pet, is there any other good use for voice grafting? I read from another forum that you can do certain quests with it since pets are indifferent some npc's.

I've yet to teach Jobeker what it means to give items back to me or to anyone else, so even if he has better faction than I, I don't see how he can do a quest for me, even if he can get the dialog. I can't think of any quests that can be completed verbally without some sort of item transfer.

By all means, if somebody can cite examples of using a pet in this manner, I'm all blue pointed ears.

As for pets giving stuff back, if it's not No-Drop, /beg will get the items back off your pet. Next time your medding and bored give him some cp, or a wep and /beg it back.

Yes, the pet begging tip was from me. I've tested it and it does work, though it is tedious.

If your Cha is below 100, you have less than a 1% chance per beg to get items back (or so my findings went). If you have cha at 100, it jumps up to (roughly) 5% chance per beg. Of course the higher your Cha, the higher the percentage will be to get your item back from pet.

This was tested at a begging skill of 200. All the times prior to having begging at 200 resulted in nothing being begged back. But then again, I never had my Cha over 100 during those times either, so you might be able to get items back prior to a 200 skill level if you have very high Cha to compensate the lower skill level.

I have tested it by handing pet a tradeable weapon and someone else with high Cha and high begging skill, and they were able to beg the item from pet.

To add to what Rygar posted above about being able to beg items off of pets, I decided to see if that wasn't already possible on P99. So I summoned a pet, gave him a rusty spear, and then did like 100 begs and disarms on him and I didn't get a single skillup or get the spear back. Then I go to a random nearby npc and start getting skillups and get given coins.
