The Baelish conclusion would have been fine if they didn't already do the same play in Season 6 as far as reversing the game on him goes. They should have continued building him up for the big fall and deleted the Season 6 finale scene.
The reason why the Baelish conclusion isn't good writing is because of a lot of different reasons, but transparency is the biggest one.
Anyway season 7, the dead screen time they spent on episodes 1-3, and the rapid progression of storyline would seem to signal that they aren't comfortable writing without source material. Not that they can't, but that they WILL NOT.
I believe D&D refused to find writers to write.
This season also confirms the spin-off shows and D&D's lack of involvement as a positive. Someone had mentioned that D&D are just bro-fans of the books and that they told GRRM R+L=whatever and GRRM gave them the job based on them being able to figure it out on their own from reading the books.

you hit the nail on the head. they were great at adapting the book to screen, but hell are they bad without book. they've had no idea what to do with Baelish since season 4 ended and it shows. I feel like they just care about the "surprise" reveal and give no shits about any of it making sense anymore. And I'm sorry, but there's no universe where Arya and Sansa out play Baelish at his own game.
