I'm a huge Arc The Lad fan and can't really recommend AtL 1,2, and 3 enough. The first one is VERY dated but is still a great experience, albeit quite short. 1 and 2 should be considered together and make up an EPIC story arc that is incredibly engaging. If you're a fan of sRPG's then you shouldn't pass them up.

Been looking for a good OLD rpg here too, there are a lot of ps1 classics on the PSN store and ive been trying to find a good one. Some ive never tried but looked at have been

Grandia
Xenogears
arc the lad
wild arms
alundra

been doing some research on them but a wiki is no match to someones honest opinion

I really like the idea of grandia and xenogears, i think it would be XG hands down if it werent for the robots. just dont like the idea.

Any input on both games would be great! )
Xenogears is about so much more than robots. They almost play a peripheral role in the storyline. All kinds of Freudian shit, an insanely deep cast of characters, long as hell (took me ~80 hours), and a soundtrack by Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger/Cross). I've only played through it once, but it stands as one of the most memorable games I've ever played. Looking back on it, I almost forgot that robots even really had anything to do with it. It's definitely not in the mecha genre, imho, though I'd understand it being placed in it.

I'd also go for Grandia 2 over the first Grandia. I love me some Grandia 2. Good example of a cast of characters that you fall in love with and are sad to see the game end. Beautiful graphics/music, etc. Also one of my most memorable RPG experiences. Dreamcast ftw, but they also rereleased it on PS2.

The original Wild Arms is a fucking joke. It's such a comically bad game, dude. I wanted to like it badly, and the intro scene is obviously cool. But overall, extremely lackluster, stupid combat, and failed execution all-around.

I purchased grandia this morning, regretting it now after hearing your testimony for xenogears 80s and a lot of playable characters are my bag. Ill have to go pick up another PSN card tomorrow and snag it.

Mill can you tell me a little more about atl? not an in depth story line or anything but some mechanics etc?

It's a strategic RPG so grid combat like Final Fantasy Tactics. You have a bunch of characters each with their own abilities that they get over time. Each character can equip different classes of weapons which allows them to have different basic attacks and have different angles of approach on the battlefield. Characters level up themselves but also rank up their items which give modifiers and also unlock hidden status effects, which you can also do through special shops in most towns.

You want a fun strategic RPG? Wizard's Crown for the commodore 64, easily found for emulator. It's old but it's pretty deep. You have a party of 8 characters, combat is turn-based on a map, different weapons have different effects like axes having a greater chance to break a shield if blocked, flails unable to be blocked, shields only able to block attacks from front or left side, you can lie prone to greatly reduce chance to be hit by enemy archers but melee can easily hit you.

There's no character levels, everything is skill-based. You spend XP to increase skills or your stats if you're really patient. There's bleeding and injury instead of hit points, both of which can make you unconscious if not taken care of. There's lots of random loot and lots to explore.

I'll add a bit more: Besides magic (from sorcerers), there's three types of damage: cut, bash and thrust. Certain armors are better vs certain types, with plate being the best overall but requiring the most strength. Every character can potentially wear plate but it will take forever to raise some class' strength stat enough, like sorcerers.

You can improve magic items you find at a magic shop if you have enough gold. Magic armor just increases in stats, but magic weapons come in three types, one that does pure magic damage, one that greatly increases physical damage, and one that blasts life force.

You can mix and match classes as you like for each character so long as they have enough INT. But giving them enough INT at creation may gimp their other stats, so a fighter/sorcerer will take forever to develop but is seriously strong once he does.

You can also take your characters to the game's sequel The Eternal Dagger, which I've always loved about those old games.

Combat can be difficult. That's actually what makes it so fun.

hmm not bad ill have to put it on the list.

one of my favorites was bahamut lagoon, turn based map strategy but when your unit came up to another to attack it turned into a more turn based final fantasy battle. Your 1 unit on the field stands as a team of 4 that fight for you, you dont have to choose to go into battle you can just attack the "team unit" and they all take damage.

There are also dragons that each team unit has, and are playable on the map and in the same fashion as above but only 1 dragon per unit team. They are able to affect the map ie setting bushes on fire and if a team unit is on it they take damage their round. you have to freeze rivers to cross them, you can later melt them with fire if an enemy is over it and they take damage on their turn.

the dragons level up and you can feed them any item in the game to enhance their stats and change their graphic. the story was meh, but the gameplay was an amazing design and surprised it didnt catch on more.

I'm bringing it back, talking about stuff that's so oldschool people probably never heard of it.
