But he was given a LOT of cash to make Vanguard, and when it was all said and done millions of dollars gave him a barely functioning alpha of a game...there are also rumors that he was spending a lot of cash on a prescription drug habit.

The only fact that I really know is that Vanguard was a mess and although he had great ideas, he wasn't able to organize a team that could put them into action.

Was gonna make a new post, but figured I would just comment on this since its along the same lines.

So I have been reading up on EQNext and trying to follow it as much as possible, but not sure I have got the "real picture".

If my understanding is correct there is a possibility for roaming world NPC's (Gorenaire, Faydedar, etc) that will be "end game"? This is pretty spot on with where p99 is, so I think it could work pretty well...assuming I am reading these 20 different websites about the game. If this isn't the case, is there truly no end game? What i mean is, you bust your butt for X item so you can take on Y boss. This, for example, is where GW2 completely went south for me. Got a character to max level, had good gear, aaaaaand nothing.... I know they want to break from the traditional MMO model, but with no way to prove your self-worth by being able to kill some epic mob after weeks/months of gearing up, what end game will there be? Yes, i know some guilds just burn through raids/instances, but thats their choice. There are plenty of caual-hardcore'ish people that enjoy the game for what it is and then when their geared out will want to experience the stuff "hardcore" guilds may have been destroying for 2-3 months already.

Also the class thing really throws me for a loop. So you pick one class and then can collect up to 40 other classes and use certain abilities? So i can just start as a human warrior for example, but later on become a warrior with a mage pet and cleric rezzes? This would definitely be breaking the mold, but not in anway positive imho. Everyone can virtually do anything the other 5 people in a group can do? I hope im missing something here..

I friggin love classic EQ and have never played a game like it. WoW came close, but then they made it entirely to noob friendly and it went down like the titanic. So, i REALLY want to like EQNext, but their "breaking the MMO mold" model seems to be way of course. From what I understand (like i said, i could be way off in some of my understandings), but people want a game with no class limitation, nothing "epic" to do once u gear up, no levels to discern where u can hunt/explore in the world, etc.. It reminds me of that southpark episode where they were able to level up on hogs to 50.

I really hope I have completely misread some of the stuff on the interwebs I have found. Anyone offer a little clarity?

You can pretty much do that in P99 as well, with the amount of clickies and potions melees can carry around these days. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

I care about tight rules in games, but I don't care what Sony does with EQ Next since it's not a product made for me. I shouldn't go to Dairy Queen and complain when they sell ice cream, see? So these people who want classic eq style gameplay in EQ Next appear idiotic to me. I don't want to associate with that.

Right now I'm getting what I want from Wurm Online, but there're lots of places to get tight-ish ruleset. Wurm Online is not a perfect game and these kinds of ideas have a lot of room to grow. Other game companies have tried to have harsher (or less controlled) rulesets, like in Secret World or Mortal Online. Because it's not popular you have to look for indie game developers to make it, so don't look for big name companies.

EQ Classic is really too old for my tastes. I like the danger aspect of corpse runs and maze-like dungeons and aggro control and no easy escape, but the rest of the game is so old. And by old I mean mediocre. I don't like the camping in old eq nor the mediocre quests nor the travel system nor other things. Resolving those issues brings in a whole bag of stuff that I don't want to go into here. The npc scripts also never advanced further. In fact, NPC scripts seemed to get dumber with the onset of the quest gui's. So rather than NPC's moving around and interacting with other NPC's or interacting with the player, they just stand in-place like mannequins. Overall, I'd like to see the danger aspects of EQ classic wrapped up in a more advanced game engine.

I'm tired of being unimpressed with games that focus almost all their time on hand holding and graphics. They've also spent a lot of time on story and voice over, but those things are mostly boring to me. First of all, I believe in the player making the story, so the world should be diverse to inspire the player. Voice overs limit the ability to add conversations to NPC's (like via scripts), until the point voice overs can be auto-generated in real-time. IMHO, the vast bulk of players are too easily pleased. I expect a lot more from the games I play. I think what I want to see - deep down - is a game world which is simulated, not pre-made, but that's probably a ways off. I also don't like all the restrictions put into games to protect players or hold their hand or generally keep them "happy". If I was more talented and committed, I'd help to make this game rather than talk about it.
