On an emu where names like "Marqy Marq and the Funky Bunch" and other ridiculous guild names are explicitly approved by staff, I think the naming policy is a joke. Don't really care tho.

I've never understood why you would play a fantasy MMO w/ dragons and elves and not have your name at least resemble something that would come from said world...

I guess they think it's clever or more than likely they do it to upset others

I agree, and furthermore will say that's the reason I could never understand players that made a Human character.

I remember on live a GM changing Toocutetocare to Tucare because somebody felt insecure.
On Xegony server I had a particularly bad week and made a character named Ihatesony, logged back in the next day and his named had been changed to Iheartsony.. that was funny, even if the name was still silly :P

I noticed the same thing about the "get names" feature. Some of the suggestions were just ridiculous. After reading the naming policy I figured that some people just didn't care, and even more people were lacking in creativity.

One of the first things I noticed when I got on this server were some of the crazy names. Things that seemed to be created for shock value (penus uprite), maybe even stupidity (Idrink Alot), or lacking major creativity or inventiveness (coca cola).

I generally just shake my head and wonder what was going through their heads when they picked those names.

Does anyone on this server actually roleplay?

I had a friend on live whose name was "Fruito Loops."

A GM showed up asking him to come up with a new surname - so he made it "Dahlumn."

Agreed!

I was even resistant to Half-Elves until my kids reminded me that Elrond was a Half-Elf, so they couldn't be "all" bad. lol.

There should be some check that rejects inappropriate names containing certain words during character creation.
There should be as in there is, or there should be as in you wish there was?

Cause there definitely isn't..

Probably something like, "I'm playing a game, and it's a very social game, so since it's just a game and I'm going to be interacting with a lot of people I want my name to be funny." Not flaming, legitimate answer; I think most people probably aren't as... enthusiastic... about KEEPING IT REAL on the elf simulator as some of the people in this thread. I think some people just want to have a laugh on their game. Personally, I always have only slightly less than elven names, passable but not roleplay quality, because I like to have a little fun with it without naming my guy Cock Sucker or Fart Farterson or whatever

Actually I may make a character named Fart Farterson
