Thought that was one of the major reasons that made that game shit? Could be wrong but I could swear I remember a lot of people bitching about that.
The problem is Rift's soul system was shit, and this one's fairly imbalanced across the board, kind of like EQ's class system is/was.

As much as I liked Rift, they got class balancing done /perfectly/. You might think that's a good thing, as it means you have an equal chance of winning 1v1. Nope, it just means you have to outnumber people.

Let's face it, if the game has no skill ceiling, the game isn't fun. Rift's PVP was awful and PVE was mind-numbingly awful with the reaction/strat based gameplay mechanics. You couldn't play your class the way you wanted to.

Archeage allows you to play the game the way you want to play in most if not all of the content. That means you can kite with an archer, you can play a melee dps, or a spellcaster, and excel at any of them. And their class balancing is kind of set up so yes, there's a FOTM, but they all have counters and there's not just one of them. The skills are set up so utility is an actual useful thing again. I like that. Add in all the gimmicks like ship combat and it's like EQ with better PVP.
