I checked the host file, and it matches the one in the P99 download insert
hmmm... ill download and insert again maybe. but I don't believe that was wrong

What environment are you running in, Windows native? VM? Wine? Make sure your eqhosts file is correct (although if you did the V33 spell file extract you should be good). Also make certain that you added "patchme" to the eqgame.exe link you made, otherwise you're going to have to reinstall etc.
