The compass was not introduced til later on. It was here on p99 for first 3 years til they were able to remove it from the client. So your "remembering" is off. The search function is also your friend if you want to find answers.

Compass was added in August 2002, beyond the scope of the server.

New Interface Window: The Compass! Press Alt-D to activate it. The higher your Sense Heading skill is, the more responsive and accurate the compass is.
It was in P99 for several years since it was part of the UI. The Devs in the last couple of years have been able to tweak the client side files and disable non-classic UI elements such as the compass and map. Hopefully, they will be able to limit the number of hotkeys and chat windows in future patches.

Hit up Bubar in the EC Tunnel and grab yourself a compass. You'll feel better in the morning.

to relieve this inconvenience, simply carry a rusty short sword around with you at all times.

dropping the sword on the ground will always point north.

you can then telegraph the direction you choose to travel in increments of 45 degrees angles.

you're welcome.
This is the kind of shit that I love about eq. I had completely forgot this trick.

I remember seeing the compass being part of EQ since Kunark. I was just shocked that it was disabled for Project 1999. No one has been able to tell me why. I'm starting to get the impression that there are portions of p99 community that are as bad as League of Legends lol. I'd hate to see the end game raiding if this is the responses to a player asking why compass is disabled.

P.S. I did raid back in EQ from 2000-2003 on the Xev Server for Harmonium.
It's not what you asked but how you asked it. it was clear that it wasn't available from the inital responses (reading comprehension ftw) and several people tried to help you work around it but you insisted on some nerd rage because people didn't answer the question exactly the way you wanted it answered. Then you started calling names.

Let me guess, you're a Millenial, arent you.
