The way I see it, you have to look at ancient priests. Were the priests of Dionysus drunk all of the time? Of course not, though they did get raging drunk at the feasts they organized. Were priests of war gods constantly on the battlefield? No, but when war did happen they were ready to bless soldiers. And priests of death gods, did they run around killing people? Of course not, they simply handled burial arrangements.
