With wonderful inventions like mq2 and showeq it's pretty much guaranteed everything has been discovered.

Im swimming from island to island in OOT and was just wondering, WTH is down below me. It made me think, I wonder if there are any zones (highly unlikely) or hidden areas that we players as a whole have yet to discover.
Areas/zones, probably not.. quests or other stuff, it's definitely possible. I only say this because there was a utility available back in like 2002 that allowed you to view the zones in wireframe or as untextured grey boxes, so you could see everything.

i figured such was the case, Even without the utility, I imagine people were checking EQ files, or using track to find mobs. It seems unlikely anything major is looming, but still makes me wonder.

Pretty sure all functional quests, killable mobs and working zones have been discovered. There may be some leftover partial zones or something in some old files somewhere but I doubt it. Some time ago Verant/SoE made a comment about the number of "unfinished quests" which made players think that they were unfinished or undiscovered by players...but eventually we found out that they were never finished by the devs.

Would be kinda cool as a Velious follow on to make a small zone, ridiculously hard to find, and scatter inscrutable clues around. Or just do the clues, that way we get more tinfoil hat mileage.

Cats on the moon is truly classic. Just no one discovered them. Honest.

Even with all the data mining sites, it's part of EQ's charm that it still can make you think that. I remember back in the day there were several stories about OoT - someone claimed to have gone swimming and found a treasure chest at the bottom, etc etc.

In 99 when there were no data mining sites, everything was hearsay. It was wonderful. There were so many crazy EQ "urban legends" that persisted for years. That is the one feeling we can never truly recapture (P99 pretty much captures the rest pretty darn good imo). Such a difference from other MMOs. I remember when WoW was in beta, I was excited, I read blogs and stuff every day. When the game came out I realized I already knew so much about it, about zones and quests and items. Thottbot and the like had already data mined everything and it was available on a website with an easy to use interface and I realized, what a letdown it was to already know so much about the game.

I have no sources to back this up, but back pre-Kunark, I remember an interview where the developers were surprised that players hadn't figured out some really important quest. If I recall correctly it had to do with Pyzjn, Varsoon and some kind of ShadowKnight version of the SoulFire.

I also recall some rumors about Qeynos Hills, but it was hard to tell if people were just trolling or not. I remember a long thread full of "undiscovered lore" back around 2001 or 2002 that claimed that there was a lot more to Varsoon and Pyzin, though I don't recall specifically an SK soulfire like weapon. Naturally the person also didn't let in on the supposed secret they knew. I also recall they claimed there was some big deal with the Barb and Ogre pirates and something about a bell calling a ghost ship or something. Probably a bunch of BS.

Then of course there's Miragul's Highway...
