The spell consumes daggers in this form:

lvl 1: 1 dagger
lvl 4: 2 daggers
lvl 8: 3 daggers
lvl 12: 1 dagger
lvl 16: 2 daggers
etc....

I believe it follows that pattern all the way up in each tier.
