I was trying to reply to her by typing things like "/fetch" and [fetch]. Turns out what I had to say was "I will fetch some for you." Should I be expecting a lot of that kind of thing?

Essentially every quest works like that. Questing though is not the common way to level, and usually is done for specific rewards. The exception that applies to you are Crushbone Belts. I'd recommend you do some independent research, or ask in game when you have specific questions. typing /ooc before your message will allow you to talk to everyone in the zone.
