I had trouble with this early in my arrival to the West. I resolved to attempt to orient my self and check my location every time I turned left to take the thought out of it and mastered the skill in no time. As others have indicated the Extra-Norrathian "Wiki" is a great repository of information amassed from adventurers since the beginning of time.

What you want to do is click on different mobs and con them and the first mob that cons red, you go up and ask it for directions.

I learned landmarks, memorable building layouts or even mob spawns.
Anything that you can remember to give you a sense of direction. Also Sense Heading + /loc is a god sent. you can line up your /loc on a map on the wiki to get a really close idea of where you are. I have almost every zone memorized,.. unless it is raining and super foggy. you'll still get turned around from time to time.
