i use maya, thought 3ds max does all the work for you pretty much, i hate the reg biped doll, to me i like to freestyle making the joints/rig ect, been a long time since ive done some 3d stuff, use to make stuff for the hell of having fun, though i dont think ill ever get into the gaming industry, but have fun with it!
