Oh, I do hate the fact that so many publishers/devs tried to clone it into new and existing mmo's. That was a mistake and really screwed up the mmo genre. Has to do with investors and big $$$ in their eyes looking at wow revenue. But, a good thing for indies, those that wanted to be different just because of the real art of game making.

The actual fun game factor was actually it's least winning trait. My personal theory is that the reason "vanilla" is so popular today, is because it was closer to a virtual world (like EQ). Early MMOs didn't feel like games, they felt you were actually transported to a different world. I believe immersion is the primary element that sucks people into an MMO and keeps them coming back. Because it's such a hard concept to understand and reproduce for most developers, I believe this is why we've seen this steady stream of uninspired games which have no problem dispensing with the suspension of disbelief in favor of some trite feature that makes everything easier.
