Yes I did a very similar thing except this was in an eastern european country, and all I did was look at the beggars. My lady friend who I was traveling with was angry and made sure I understood to not even look at the beggars let alone give them something.

It just seemed weird to me, to walk by without looking at them I felt like I was being dehumanizing to them but for people there in that country it's customary to not even acknowledge the ones begging.

I suppose in the USA many do that too, but I don't. I tend to glance at beggars/homeless at the very least because I like to understand that they are not posing a threat. Walking by and not even watching those around me make me feel even more vulnerable.
