Also if you are only eating 1300 calories and not eating health foods...your going to feel starving all the time, your skin is going to get fucked up and its not healthy. You wont put on any muscle without enough protein.

So why it is calories stupid -- its also important to pay attention to what you spend those calories on.
True, there is no magic simple rule for food, otherwise all food would have a score and things would be a lot easier. And yeah, protein and such matter too. But at the same time, if you're going to pick one metric for losing weight, pick calories. You 100% can eat crap, but watch your calories, and still lose weight: just look at that diet professor who lost 30 lbs. or whatever eating only McDonald's.

Also it's worth noting that the calorie recommendation numbers you mentioned will vary for others based on their height/weight/gender.
