Classic = NPC eats an item if its not the right item or if your faction isn't good enough. This was changed sometime much later on live.

Yeah you're probably SoL [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.] Works just the same as other quests - ie. the Aegis of Life quest; if you don't have the faction it'll get eaten.
