4 hours variance is short enough that most people that play this game, an get a character to 50, would be willing to do it.
8 hours? Not for everyone for sure, but still a doable length of time.
16 hours? Fuck that, it's mind numbing and life disruptingly long. Only the hardcore neckbeards willing to stay up for ever/stick to a real life schedule purely based around mob spawns are willing to do it, or you end up having to be in some awful huge zerg federation an just fling huge numbers of people at it to ensure enough are online at all times over the 16 hours.
4 to 8 hours variance seems a lot more reasonable/fun/healthy
