Ignorant even for his time; I do not judge by hindsight. Circa 1492 the size and rough shape of the Earth were well understood, at least among the educated. Columbus basically thought he was the smartest guy in Europe and everyone else was an idiot, and thought the Earth was dramatically smaller than it actually is, and that Cathay and the Indies were but a modest voyage across the Atlantic. He was of course utterly wrong and laughed out of numerous courts before he found a Castille which had spare cash due to having just completed the reconquista and which could afford to lose a few old ships. This does not refute the man's unquestioned impact on history, but it puts it into perspective: Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

Update: Jesus spoke to me about this fear. A great fear of mine as it will bring great sadness and despair to me. He said to me "...and rumors of wars". Nice massive broad stroke. You need to investigate religious stories more if you hold this belief. The Bible alone is one of the more deep and complex books out there. The ideas it covers and the way it covers them is truly magnificent. It shows a deep understanding of human nature that is astounding when you consider it's origins.

The Bible been rewriten few times in the past 1000+ years. Who knows how much they fucked it up, and who knows how many mistakes were made when they translated it.
