Shamwowi was here for 2000+ populations on P99. So was I. There's a bit of a tradeoff. The leveling game and guild formation scene is much better with a higher populations; with Blue's present population few new guilds are created and the community feels somewhat static. Pick-up groups are much easier to find with a higher population as well, which feeds into the long-term health of the server by making it easier for newer players to level up and build player associations rather than dork around solo'ing until they get bored and quit. The drawback of population is you might not find a specific camp you want open, but Velious is large enough you can nearly always find something worthwhile. There were days during Kunark on P99 that the wife and I would log in and absolutely everything that might've been worth doing for us was taken, but that hasn't happened since Velious launch. It's a good size game world.
Having been here from the start, the old world felt okay at 500 and crowded at near 1000. Kunark felt okay at 1000 and crowded by 1400. Velious feels fine at 1400 and was still okay at 2100+. Long-term, I believe it's healthier for the community to have one 1200+ population server than two ~600 population servers.

Voted for merge of population. P99 hasn't been right since the split.
Green was fun for the opening week before people spread out to the larger world. Fighting over single skeleton spawns in noobie zones, feeling like getting full cloth was something, talking smack to completely new players who don't understand Everquest fantasy racism and watching veteran EQ players get raped by the East Commons Griffin (that was the most enjoyable).
