Young mage, the advice from Jimjam is true.

Fighting humanoid creatures is pretty good money early on. Skeletons are particularly bountiful with their cloth armor, weapons, perhaps a bag or box, and some minor coin, too. Goblins, gnolls, and undead are good hunting too... be on the lookout for a staff-wielding baddie, because that could be 1 plat walkin'! Cracked staff ganggg

It's rough out there getting started, but fear not, as a mage you need little other than your pet, a stack of malachite, and a fireball. I was always a fan of the earth pets for their roots and tanking ability, but the fire pet's damage shield is amazing.

If you don't want to invest in some backpacks for all the loot you'll be bringing back to the vendor, you can summon temporary 100% weight reducing bags (Dimensional Pockets) to lug the heavy stuff back. They are temporary, so they disappear not long after you camp, but hey, are trying to save plat here! Get one backpack for food/water/malachite and... what else do you need? Time to adventure!

There are a lot of spells that you can pass on at the early levels. You can skip every "rain" spell, every direct-damage-to-summoned-creatures-only spell, many of the summon: item spells can be skipped (do you need to summon a whisp stone?)...

Definitely get: your self buffs, burnout, bind, gate, invis, see invis, pet heals, damage shields, fire and earth pets...

And here's a fun trick for the early levels: give your pet a rusty 2h weapon like a halberd or scythe and watch the damage go way up!
