P99 doesn't really make me happy. I've been listening to this woman on YouTube talk about cults for awhile, and I am considering whether or not guilds fit in the framework she lays out to meet her definition of a cult. I'm leaning towards yes. Basically high control groups centered around an idea or charismatic figure. Imagine a Shinko guild without Shinko. At best it's barely functional, but people who like Shinko like Shinko and that's enough glue to keep the barrel barge from sinking. I don't exactly thrive in those environments. I challenge dumb things and cults are about conformity. Not really trying to get back into one.

The difference between a cult and a religion is the level of control that it holds over you.

One could argue that a guild has some kind of control over you because of DKP you invested into it, but.... idk. That is kind of a stretch because you can always delete the guild bank and ninja loot items and leave anytime you want.

It's a community and you can leave your communities any time you want. It's really hard to do because humans are social idiots and will stay somewhere harmful if they have connections there. Like to your point about DKP, yes 100% I remained in toxic situations because I had dragon bucks left over.

if you explained the application process to a guild like TMO 2.0 (or whatever era they finally let me in),
and the avg hours people track before burning out, i'm pretty sure it qualifies.

cult lite* maybe due to it being 100% transactional, but then i remember sticking up for what's his name behavior in RnF pretty hard.

so yeah
