I don't buy that this is a prank at all. so why do this ritual at all? I've seen the exact same ritual in real life before and it's the same. There are two reason why they did this ritual. It's to accelerate the destruction of mankind. It happens like this - all the observers of the sacrifice FAIL to stop or do anything to curtail this behavior or general sentiment throughout institutions or government etc. That knowledge of failure is held as GUILT in everyone that knows about it. The guilt attacks them through the universe teaching them that they did the wrong thing. This escalates from a micro to macro scale. The universe accelerates the process of mankind facing the said challenges.
