Haven't kept up with the thread but read an article this morning that THJ is officially shut down under judges orders. The article cited that THJ was making $100k per month on the project. Looking at reported revenues for daybreak games, THJ was stealing roughly 1% of daybreak's monthly revenue, which realistically should represent a much larger portion of their profitability given that classic EQ requires little to no maintenance/overhead. That is absolutely a material impact to the company and no surprise that THJ's action led to the lawsuit and ultimate defense of EQ IP.

So yeah, MASSIVE difference between THJ and a volunteer led, unpaid, emu representing the game as it stood in era. They don't care about a free to play community based world where people re-live nostalgia. They absolutely care about people stealing their IP, bastardizing it, and using it to drive substantial revenue away from their company. A company who paid tangible money for the rights to use this IP for profit with the expectation of yielding certain amounts of revenue to make the investment worthwhile (which btw could be the difference between EQ existing at all or not).
Had more to do with THJs overall success.

Everything is relative, but arguably $100k a month is rookie numbers for a gaming company. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...ies_by_revenue

Even the 80th company on that list (maker of series like Shadow Warrior and Serious Sam) makes $106 million annually.

Now, that's a little apples and oranges, since I think that studio has more games than Daybreak (although if you count expansions, maybe they're close?). But my point is, they're not doing all that great if their revenue is $1.2k million annually, and the 80th biggest game company is making two orders of magnitude more every year.

100k a month is more like I would expect live to make.

He said that's 1% of it (idk where h e got that number)

But if live is making 10 million dollars a month, I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

You may take this for what it is worth. Basically, EQ drives a lot of revenue for DBG. Here's a link to a site explaining it.

I think some of the data is from this site, but it brought up a thought. What if Sony made EQ as a PS5 game? I know EQ2 existed, but imagine EQ on the PS5. A comparable game would be Elder Scrolls Online which I have played on PC and PS5. I actually liked the PS5 version better.

Ah yea the donate for rewards format, which is the same thing as a cash shop with an extra step, I don't think they set them up this way for legal reasons as much as to make it appear more legit to gullible players that would slander private servers(particularly in wow scene) as "pay to win" server. That being said I did enjoy playing there briefly, and I havent touched live in 20 years. I don't think people should witch hunt them just because they made money, especially in a non-competitive environment, but I DO understand why they might get mashed to bits in court.

For me, it wasn't just them making money - it was all the tricks and tactics they've used since the lawsuit started to remove negative comments, put on a facade towards their donors, and generally just act like grifters.

All of their arguments in court fell flat. Probably more because their lawyers were out of their league against DBG lawyers. But - they have done alot of damage to their reputation in the eyes of many by removing (mostly valid) criticisms of their business plan.

They also really sneakily, as someone here pointed out, tried to get an agreement with Daybreak by lying about the nature of The Heroes Journey.

They are grifters. They may not have started as grifters - but once the money started flowing in - they played by every rule in the grifter handbook.
