Mobs definitely equipped items you gave them. I have vivid memories of giving an extra Ghoulbane we got to a green frog and training him to entrance so we could transfer it to a mule. I don't have any evidence, and I'm sure others remember this however.

That would suggest that the current way it works on p99 where when you trade items to NPCs uncharmed they will equip them but not drop them is incorrect.
