Nah, un nerfing guards and merchants isn't a small thing (which is something covered by the wide charm immunity of iksar). Both these types of mob have a wide environmental role for all players.

This isn't about game balance though - this is more like experimental archaeology. Trying to recreate how things were done in the past. You don't go to an iron age village and tell them to use steel and concrete instead of wattle and daub.

A bit of a tangent, but I'd never even heard of experimental archaeology (a great term for this) until I saw https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secrets_of_the_Castle. If you ever want to see modern day archeologists (literally) building a castle to figure out how people did so back in the day, I highly recommend it (and it's free on Prime).

Why would Iksar not being able to be charmed even considered a feature? Is it Lore based or some time of balance they were hard coding?

I ran around on Live's Test server this week trying to charm some Iksars on a 60 ENC.
Ssolet Dnaas, Shezlie Furscale, Zazlan Furscale, Sarth Scarscale, Sirtha Scarscale were all easily charmed with Allure.
Himart Kichith outright resisted every Allure and mez attempt. Dictate lasted for its full duration.

Similar to guard charm immunity, iksar charm immunity seems based on Race ID.

An excerpt from Torven's study of client decompiles:
Quote:
The March 2000 client also had charm immunity for city guard NPCs. The spell logic checked for specific race IDs in a switch case. These IDs are: 44, 67, 71, 77, 78, 81, 88, 90, 92, 93, 94, 106, 112, 139. If charm was cast on any NPC of any of these races, the spell automatically resisted. To be clear: charm immunity was added to guards at some point during the classic era, and this March 2000 client is only one of two clients in that era that we were able to obtain and decompile, the other one being before the game even launched, so it was likely added much earlier than March 2000. (perhaps December 99 since a patch note mentions guards gaining 'stats')
Race IDs as documented by EQEmu:
Code:
ID	Name
44 Guard
67 Human
71 Human
77 Dark Elf
78 Erudite
81 Halfling
88 Clockwork Gnome
90 Barbarian
92 Troll
93 Ogre
94 Dwarf
106 Guard
112 Guard
128 Iksar [Not immune to charm]
139 Iksar
Click "Raw NPC Data" to expand for Race ID in Allaclone links.

Bandits, brigands, footpads, and marauders in FoB all immune to charm.

Picaroons in EJ immune to charm.

Treasure hunters in TT immune to charm.

However, 'iksar necromancer' in Sebilis CAN be charmed.

So it wasn't all iksar. It will be a lot of work getting a definitive list. But at a glance it would appear all the outdoor zones Kunark iksar like footpads, marauders etc should be immune to charm at least.

Couldn't charm iksar marauders in LOIO on live today.

Maybe it is just iksar of the rogue clan, guards and merchants which were uncharmable?

Himart Kichith may have been resistant but ultimately wasn't immune, and the Race ID reflects that.
