Apparently the original UI is no longer accessible without a great deal of headache and work, as it is not based on the XML script the later (and current) UIs are based. Velious is about as close as you're going to get, sadly.

The old UI's pieces are packed into the many "bmpwad" files you'll fine in your EQ client. From Classic up though PoP when it was removed, and all the changes in between. Including the Character Select screen etc. How it was set up was hardcoded into the client. Eventually they switched to how UI's work on EQ today, the .xml way. To enable custom UIs. While the pieces are still there, they can't be used. You can go in and get them. Then with a bit of creating Photoshopping and some .xml skills can make a custom UI using Classic UI parts to make it as close to Classic as possible but it will never be perfect. Especially on Widescreen PC's for example.

Doh, so I guess there's no use holding out for the old character select screen either [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]
