To know if hide has worked, you need to con something that doesn't see through hide to see if it has changed from not indifferent to indifferent. You'll always appear to have gone invis on your screen, even though you might not actually have.

You can tell if sneak is working because you'll be moving slowly, and everything (EVERYTHING) will con indifferent to you if you are behind it.
