This is what got me playing EQ back in 2000. I got the EQ demo in one of those "demo pack" CDs that came with PC GAMER mag. Didn't load correctly, it's looking for files in other folders that I don't have...I'm guessing you have a folder called EQ Stuff on drive E?

You could also use the tutorial exe to load any zone in the game, by modifying the command line to use a different map file. The loaded zone wouldn't load any NPCs of course, but you could explore it offline.

The tutorial zone exists, I turned the entire zone into an event that mocked the server's most notorious personalities, complete with simulated ddos attacks that made people lag out during the fight with raren.

Unfortunately, I can't get the 3d part to work (the pre-alpha sign in pop up comes up, sees the sign in server is down and jumps into single player mode), however wine fails with the "this requires 256 color mode".

I even set up a Windows 95 virtual machine to attempt to run it, still no dice (although maybe the virtual was lacking proper 3d support, my Windows 95 image was in Polish so I couldn't read the error code).

Reading the exe in emacs hexl-mode (or GNU/linux hexdump) has some interesting strings in there (it was actually made/copyright by a company that branched off Sierra before it was Verant).

I'll upload the bitmaps for viewing somewhere.
