Default Smithing Question

So I wanna try Smithing to craft armor for my Cleric. I went to http://eqtraders.com and the best I can see is to start out making Sheet Metal. But ... this is super expensive for a newer player since the brick of Ore cost like 5g a pop. Is there another cheaper way to start out Smithing?

It takes a good amount of work before you can reliably make banded.

Make a file
Make metal bits to 18 (alternately making tarnished weapons will do you up to 24ish)
Make studs or steel boning until 35
Make pots until 50
Make lanterns until 68
Make dairy spoons until 74
At 75+ you could start making low end banded pieces.

If the cost of bricks of ore at 5g is turning you off smithing, its probably not a good idea to level it up at this point in time. You'll spend a fair amount of time and (relative) plat just getting to the point where you can make the armour you want.

Up until recently it the bricks could be had by combining tarnished weapons and water. This recipe was taken out with no explanation. Someone must have thought their cousin said that their buddies sisters husband said he rememberd this wasn't in classic and bam gone.

someone did post original patch notes as to when the tarnished weaps to ore conversions were originally added..think it was 2002..its in the bugs forum somewhere. So when they got proof, they took it out. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]
