Unimpressive lightning flashes

I'm currently XPing on an alt in North Ro. There is a thunder storm but the lightning flashes are not as impressive as I remember them.

I remember in the kunark era visiting a friend's house and watching him run around cabalis. Suddenly a thunderstorm started and there was maybe a couple of seconds of lightning flash. With the storm passing over me there is just one very quick flash of light instead of the several.

Any reasons for this? Is the lightning in Kunark zones better than old world, or is this a pre-titanium vs titanium client issue? Was my friend's computer just really good at lightning?
