People getting mad when you inspect them

I know this has been discussed before but was just talking with an old friend about it. One of the things that I clearly remember from live at least on my server was that people would get absolutely enraged if you inspected them without asking, not everyone but a lot would. Don't really notice that here. Have we all matured since then? (Doubtful). I see it as a former of flattery that I'd take time to check you out but my buddy thinks it's disrespectful to not ask. What do you guys think?

I wouldn't want some greasy stranger rubbing their hands all over me. Checking out the tags on my clothing.
Has nothing to do with maturity. It's about personal space.

Example: I'm an erudite mage. I wear a robe that covers up all my other items. You're telling me that people can see what items i'm wearing based on looking at me?

And I don't even know them! how rude..

Inspecting is not just simply looking at a player. That is why you have to get near them to inspect them. To get all handsy.
