Hey folks, brand new here...
Im not the least bit tech savvy, and reading wikis on specs and such is just Greek to me. I did poke around and run into a lot of dead links so im just looking for some help.
If anyone can point me to an ABC/ step by step to getting this to work Id be much obliged.

Ive tried setting the program up to get closer to original sounds but I end up with no music? Foot steps, voice, ambient are great. Even the tunnel echoes are awesome, but no tunes.

Any help?

I like to use CoolSoft VirtualMidiSynth with an AWE32 soundfont (not included with EverQuest - you'll have to find this elsewhere) + the synthusr.sf2 soundfont included in the EverQuest folder. This gets very close to my version of the original sound experience. You also need to delete some mp3s from the EverQuest folder (like combatmusic) - this is covered in the Project 1999 Get Started Guide.

If you're on Windows 10, you also need the CoolSoft MIDIMapper to set your default midi playback to use VirtualMidiSynth.

I recommend reading through their documentation and trying it out. You'll probably need to play with it to get it set up just right for your needs.

Thanks for the kindly speedy reply. I finally got the game working and was ehhhhh whats up with the music. I had pulled the three files as suggested. .... but you know the rest.

Ok I finally got things up and running. Now the big question is... is there a better midimixer that anyone can recommend? I seem to remember raising and lowering the different instruments and this stuff sounded MUCH better than what Im getting now.
I did find some music files that sound amazing, but something, something just doesn't taste right if you know what I mean...

If you are using Virtual Midi Synth, it has a built in mixer and you should be able to adjust each instrument's volume to whatever you like.

But the thing that makes the biggest difference for me is having both an awe32 soundfont and synthusr.sf2 both loaded in virtual midi synth. The awe32 rom should be at the top of the load list and synthusr.sf2 next. You can also add synthusr2.sf2 which has some higher quality instruments mixed in to the bottom of the soundfont list in virtual midi synth. Just depends on the flavor of classic sounds that you are looking for. If you are doing all that correctly already then don't know what other advice to give you.

One more idea though...You should be able to compare the sound you are getting to some YouTube recordings. Look up awe32 everquest. Yours should sound close or exact after properly set up. If it doesn't then you are probably still not set up correctly. Or even just look up videos to see if those are closer to the sound you remember or not really.
