Thumbs up Speeding saves lives

According to the Solomon Curve, you're safest when you drive a bit faster than the average flow of traffic.

Doesn't surprise me. I've been in situations that I know for a fact where my speed helped me avoid an accident. I'm the only one in my family that's never been in an accident. I typically drive 90-100 mph on highways.

common sense, since you need to slow or speed up to avoid being in "the pack" .. i also have my own bubble. NEXT

According to the wikipedia article based off of research performed in the 50s states you're safest when traveling the same speed as the pack. It's when you deviate above or below that speed when your risk increases.

Also take into account that over the past 60 years the amount of traffic on average has likely soared above the levels of traffic in the 50s.

Says there was other more modern research that confirmed the findings. The anomaly is side collisions (e.g. while turning) are generally done at lower speeds.

I like how the subsequent research from 1970 involved 114 crashes with 216 vehicles on a lone highway in Indiana and based all their research off such a small sample. I'm sure Einstein would've been comfortable basing a theory off that sample size.

I don't disagree with the research. Obviously if every vehicle on the road was traveling at precisely the same speed at all times, no one would get rear ended.

You're still safer driving the same speed rather than slightly faster.

...so what if everyone is speeding up to be faster than traffic? WHERE DOES IT END?!

I drive the speed limit, going maybe 1-5mph over on highways. In my ~10 years of driving, I have not been in a single accident and have received one traffic ticket (not making a complete stop at a flashing red light at 3am with no one in sight). I'm kind of a country girl, so city drivers annoy the shit out of me.

Learn some defensive driving you crazy assholes! [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]
