Please exclude my ignorance, how do you have more time while in a war zone fighting a war? are there support jobs that basically run 9-5? and the rest of your time is spent dislodging sand out of various crevice's or playing eq? Do all military personal get net in their rooms/bunks do you have to share access? Do you bring your own computer or can you actually play EQ on military hardware. Keep in mind all i know about war is based on news and cnn. I guess i though everyone would be cleaning guns and getting ready for the next mission/hunt. Just curious

The warzone I'm in isn't really a "war zone" anymore. What my unit does here is provide communications for A LOT of operations. We get mortared every day just about, but because the "combat troops" are out of Iraq, we really don't get to go outside and chase them...We have security around our base which does a faily decent job of defending the base, but of course, they fuck up too and we get hit with mortars.

My team runs 12 hour shifts, and after the inital "setup" of our equipment, we go into monitoring mode and just wait till something breaks, and generally it doesn't. I haven't had to fix anything in the last 4 months... :\

We do stupid shit here ALL the time, as the saying goes, there is a lot of "hurry up and wait", After a 12 hour shift, there is something back at the room that needs to be fixed for a higher up or someone at an outpost, so I have to fix their issue(s) and help them with whatever it is that needs to be done, sometimes that invovles me loading up on a chopter and taking a quick 2-3hr flight to some other post in Iraq. If that doesn't happen, I normally go to the gym for 1-2hrs and then head back to the room to talk to wife/friends/play EQ.

There are 2 people to a room, and you have to pay for your own internet, and at times it sucks ass, but hey, at least it's internet. $120.00 a month for 256k service, expensive, I know, but I like to keep up with how my baby is doing, along with my 8 year old and wife. Every soldier pretty much has internet, and if they don't I let them borrow mine for a few mins to skype back home.

Where I work and where I sleep is two different places, it's about a 20 min walk to and from, while carrying 30-45lbs of extra gear. It's not to bad though, because it's an easy workout heh...I COULD bring my personally laptop to work, but I don't really want my computer being used on a gov. internet connection, just in case [You must be logged in to view images. I'm military equipment now posting, I can view MOST websites, but cannot view stuff like facebook, myspace, youtube, and ESPN, which sucks...but what our higher ups don't know is we have haji TV at work, it's about 10 channels and it normally fields 2-3 football games per saturday and sunday (along with the World Series games).


Out of the 5 months I've been here, I've fired my weapon three times, been mortared a bunch but mainly, I do a weekly PMCS (which pretty much means I make sure it's clean/functioning) on my weapon.

All in all Iraq is an experience, I wish I wasn't here for a year, but I'm not going to get emo about it, there are worst places to be. I get to work and train Iraqi soldiers, which honestly, that is the most nerve wrecking part, because honestly, I don't trust them, because I know they don't trust me....It's a fubar situation and just because combat troops are out of Iraq doesn't mean the WAR HAS STOPPED.

My guess is that if we see football scores, we lose the war on terror.........actually we have never been given a valid reason, *shrug* I can view anything on my internet in my room, but for whatever they have certain filters for websites, it's pretty ruh-tard'd

That's extremely easy to get around. One of two things is going on; either your DNS will not return an IP address for those sites, or that IP address is blocked by your ISP. If it's a DNS issue just go into your network settings and change your DNS to openDNS or something. If it's an IP block purchase a VPN for 5 bucks per month and neither your ISP's BFR(big fucking router) or your LAN's firewall will be able to see any sites that you have been browsing since all of your computers traffic will be routed through one IP address in some distant foreign country. DSL really blows; I'll never go back after docsis 3.0

Aye, but we have eyes on us at ALL TIMES, if they catch you messing with anyone on the military supplied hardware, you can lose rank/pay, and even be put up for treason.

It's not that easy everywhere. Any locked down network like centcom will not be easy to get around, and why risk it; You're talking about the US Military here.

Could not have said it better myself. Back when all the "troops" were leaving Iraq, with all the pictures, and videos of Strykers/HMMMVs rolling out into Kuwait, there was almost little to no mention of all at the remaining 50k+ troops here. We were watching the news over here just laughing, because that's all we can do.
When I went home on R&R people who asked me where I was, I told them Iraq, and they were like "But I thought that war was over", I just kinda laughed...If you guys pray and/or what not, just keep the troops in your thoughts. Especially w/ the holidays coming up, heck, I'm more pissed about missing Halloween than I am Tgiving or Xmas lol [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.] There are plenty of young soldiers over here who don't have ANYONE back home to send them carepackages, by my wife and several others take good care of them by sending them their own, but these kids over here don't bitch, they don't whine, they just do their job and take care of business. Anyway, it's not all easy over here, but it isn't like we are having to go weeks without food.
