This is not true: if the person is out of range, but the corpse is in range, you'll target the corpse (you will not "get nothin").
You only need the "'s corpse" part if the person is standing nearby while you're trying to target the corpse.
On a general note, this is because of how /target works: it does a partial first match (ie. it looks for any name whose first letters match whatever you typed). So when you type /tar bob, it still works even on "Bob's Corpse", because "bob" is the first part of "Bob's Corpse".
Sometimes on raids I find it easier to /tar *a few characters* and then do /tt (/ttell, ie. target tell), since there's no way to send a tell by just typing the first few characters.
