I don't think they were strict at all in OG EverQuest. I was that annoying kid who petitioned once a week to get new surname, and I remember the GMs laughing at some the ridiculous ones I chose (Thunder`Snake). Was on a Human Monk too. Someone told me on P99 only elves are allowed to use `, but I can confirm we 100% used ` as humans.

Another surname I used on almost all of my characters towards the end was simply "X." For whatever reason this isn't allowed on P99 even though it was 100% allowed on OG EQ.

I was in a hurry to play with friends once and couldn't get a name past the check, so I finally just ended it with 'boom'. I still feel dirty.
