Game Mechanics: Guards in Ro

GF and I were taking on Red spiders when we had a dog add. we were both too low on mana to take both so we ran for the guards. when we got there, the guards didn't kill the spider or the dog they just stood there and watched us die. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]
Back in the day on Live if you agroed to much you could run the mobs to the guard and they would dispatch the mobs. Is this working as intended?[You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

Me from other room: RUN TO THE GUARDS
---I died----
her: IM AT THE GUARD HE's NOT DOING ANYTHING!
me: RUN TO THE GUARDS AT THE INN!
her: THEY ARENT DOING ANYTHING! ---- IM DEAD----

This happened in what zone, with what guards?

The two guards at the Inn when you first enter North ro from freeport along with the wondering guard (Brendyl?)

This seems to also be the case in east commonlands, at least with Guard Tolus. He doesn't seem to care that a lion is ripping you up in front of him. He may even be enjoying it.

Hmm, you sure? Just checked and Guard Tolus in EC definitely does not attack lions. Didn't check any other mobs.
