Default Just starting out. Tips on where to go?

Hi guys. Just starting here on P99 and enjoying myself so far. Im not a total newb to EQ, but not that far from it.

After some time deciding on a class to play, i ended up with a Barbarian Shaman. He is currently level 3, and im not opposed to recreating him.

So, i know that getting to queynos wouldn't be too difficult, i know how to get through Black Burrow, but from what i've read, Freeport area is the place to be for both leveling and money. Unfortunately, i don't know of a way to safely get there. Would it be.more benefitial to just make an Ogre or Troll Shaman?

Alternatively, i was considering making a Human Enchanter and starting in Freeport, but i enjoy healing and, buffing and debuffing, and like the speed boost i can give myself as Shaman.

If i do end up keeping the Barb, what loot should i keep to try and get some plat from the Barb starting area? I know of bone chips and spiderling silk, bit what about stuff like gnoll scalps, polar bear skin, and meat that drops?

Any and all help is grratly appreciated.

Blackburrow is a lot of fun! I'd probably hang out there for a while until you at least get your Bind spell.

Bump,

I also started a High Elf Enchanter, but he's really weak. I couldn't even kill a level 1 mob.

Hey man, both of these are fantastic race/class choices. They both will level very quickly, are needed in groups, and have a very easy time soloing, you can't really go wrong.

The starting areas for both are fine and have a mechanic to help you level more quickly.

wiki.project1999.com is your friend.

Blackburrow has the Gnoll Fang quests (turn these in to the Halas person for great money/exp) and Greater Faydark/Crushbone has the Crushbone Belt turn in quest.

The Shaman will feel a lot more powerful when they grab Spirit of Wolf at level 9 so you can run faster.

Enchanter literally gets more powerful every time they level up until they hit 60. Try to buy the level one animation, it is the enchanter pet and will help you kill stuff.

The Qeynos area is fine for XP/loot. I think Freeport/EC is a bit overrated -- it's great when it's not too crowded (which it sometimes is), and it can be mediocre if you don't beg buffs from the EC tunnel, which I personally don't like to do.

What Qeynos area has are some of the best low level XP quests, that also will give you more than enough coin to buy spells for many levels, namely:

Gnoll Bounty / Moonstones (Gnoll Fangs)
Rabid Wolves (Diseased Wolf Pelts)
Rabid Grizzlies (Putrid Bear Hides)
Bandit Sashes

The gnoll fangs drop off of gnolls in and around Blackburrow, and they stack, so you carry a bunch of them and turn them in for massive XP and reasonable coin.

The rabid wolves and bears spawn in Qeynos Hills, Western Karana and Northern Karana. The bandits that drop bandit sashes can be found West, North and East Karana. You can work on all three of these quests at once by leveling in WK from level 8-15 or so. All are decent XP and cash -- the diseased pelts always drop off of their respective mobs, and are good for 2p/4p worth of rewards. The bandit sashes are common drops off bandits and you get a bronze weapon (which sells for around 2p on average; the bandits can also drop bronze weapons). Unlike the gnoll fangs these quests are a bit more inventory-intensive since they each take up a full space in your inventory.

The brown bears and grizzlies also have a chance of dropping High Quality Bear Skins which sell for 30p on the player market, though you may have to hold on to them for a while since there won't be a lot of buyers in Western Antonica.

Good places for newbs to find groups are:
Gfay / Crushbone
East commonlands and Oasis
Field of Bone & Kurns Tower
sometimes upper guk & runny eye.

I have had trouble finding groups near Qeynos and had to relocate any characters created in that area due to the lack of LFG people. this is the case on both blue and red servers.

play whatever class/race you enjoy and dont change for no one.

While I'll leave my opinions on race/class choice out of this.

You generally always want to level to ~5 in your native starting zone. At which point for a new beginner with no high level friends and no starting gear. I would highly recommend only go as far as the next leveling area attached to your starting zone.

Everquest in this era can be extremely challenging but you'll have a great sense of accomplishment when you get to where you're going. Don't let deaths get you down. Everyone has died at the start of their EQ venture.

Barbs can actually level from 1 to 60 in everfrost+permafrost using Halas as a vendor hub. (but that's not the easy road)

High elves,. you're best bet is to get up enough in level, join an orc hill group in Gfay then progress into a crushbone group. Turn in the belts and or shoulder pads to the dwarves. You can get to 16+ with this method np.

If you really want to go out there into the world. North Karana - Kill wisps(they're ~lvl 9+?) and turn in lightstones. You wont regret it, PP+exp. (use magic or a magic weapon to hurt them)

This quest is literally the best way for a light race to get starting spell/gear plat! if you are lvl 12-18 go out to the western karanas, kill bandits until they dont give xp, and collect sashes to turn into the paly guildy in Qeynos in exchange for a bronze weapon that you can vendor for plat [You must be logged in to view images. Qeynos area is great to level in and there are awesome suggestions in this thread.

When you start killing Gnolls in Blackburrow, save EVERY SINGLE gnoll fang you collect until you are level 11. At level 11 turn them all in and you will level to probably 13 or 14. At this point run to the Karanas and make your way to the Wizard Spire. Do "/who all Dial" and ask for a port to West Common - go to Oasis until around 18 and then go to Highpass. Do high pass until 22 killing Orcs and then go into the Keep and you can stay there until 31. People will say you can stay longer but I find XP past 31 to be abysmal

That's how I have leveled almost all my characters it seems, and a route I enjoy.
