Asus Sabertooth Z77 + 3770k: CPU Ratio Locked

Ran into an odd problem after I moved my PC to clean and then had to reset bios because it wouldn't boot. Since it cleared out my OC settings I went to set them back up and it's refusing to let me set the CPU Ratio above 35. It's acting as if it is a locked CPU when it isn't. I had the multiplier at 46 for 8 months (give or take) and it worked fine.

Short version of story: Used to be overclocked, no longer overclocked after a BIOS Reset and my multipler cannot be set above 35.

Long story:

I have a Sabertooth Z77 and a 3770k CPU. Until recently my cpu was overclocked with a 46 multiplier. This worked well for over 8 months.

Last weekend I shut my computer off and moved it to clean the space around it. After placing the computer back and booting up, I was not getting any video. After testing various things, I used the BIOS RESET jumper on the board and was able to get video. I put the jumper back into it's normal position.

Since this reset my bios I lost all my settings. I set back my RAID and decided to work with the overclock later.

I had some time tonight to start messing with it again so I reinstalled Asus Suite 2. I did not have the same options as I remember having with overclockability, so I decided to update my BIOS firmware to latest (1805). After that I still did not see any new options in the software, so I went into the BIOS.

I started messing around with options and realized it's not letting me change my CPU multiplier past 35. I've tried all sorts of combinations.. OC manual, OC XMP, turbo off, etc. I've attempted reverting firmware and no luck.

I made a video of the screen, as I figure this would be the best way for people to see all the settings I have and can see exactly whats going on. As soon as I enter any number above 35 in the CPU Ratio field, it resets it back to 35.

It's acting as if my CPU is locked, but it isn't (3770k).

Reinstall the latest version of the BIOS, and disable speedstep.

I've installed probably 4 different versions of the BIOS, still having the issue. Are you saying that it's been confirmed that reinstalling the BIOS until it works is a fix?

I had this problem one time with a server computer. After many hours of forum searching and other various things, i found out I had to reseat my processor. I popped open my case, cleaned off the heat shield while i was in there, slapped in some new paste and placed it back down. Boot up comp and bam, it would allow me to change the ratio. I have NO idea why this was happening. But this fixed it.

yeah i was going to say the same thing. even though you reset bios i would check to make sure you have the most recent (compatible) bios to your processor. manufacturers sometimes set your computer to an old bios that actually isnt compatible with your mobo / cpu combination. check the compatibility for your mobo and processor combination and flash those bios. there are great standard instructions online for flashing bios

The BIOS worked for 8 months with the cpu ratio changed.. why would it suddenly not be compatible anymore? I don't think that's the case.

I'd be really hesitant to do that and risk bending any pins and stuff. Those things can be a pita to come out sometimes.

Have you changed the voltages at all? Is it locked with default settings? I would recommend reseating RAM and the processor...the temp sensor could be off. Take a can of air to the heatsink/fan and processor slot on mobo with the cpu removed.

They are alot more resilient than ya think, and it should just easily come right up, and then gently slides right back in.. its scary if ya have never done it.. once ya do it once.. ya will toss them around like its nothing.

oh and ps.. if this happened after ya cleaned out the comp.. sounds like i might be right cause you might have made it come loose when moving comp around.
