All studies that have been done show a team is more effective when they have a common goal. You can look into research in the military about new members joining a current squad. The new guy needs to always incorporate himself and it is always easier with a common goal. When you have a country excited for nationalism, it does better. When you allow immigrants that do not share the same culture and do not care about nationalism, it destroys the sense of pride that people hold pretty true.
